Jockey's Ridge State Park

Naturally, we had to visit Jockey's Ridge and play in the sand! There was a lot more water than I remember being there last year. Hinrew thought the same thing from his previous trips.

Hin had his GoPro camera that we let the big kids wear. Liam wore it for his ascent to the top, and when we later watched it in an edited form we just about fell out of our chairs laughing at the way a 6 year old looks at things. It didn't help any that it was in fast forward so he also sounded like a chipmunk!

Jockey's Ridge is a fabulous place to fly kites. Knowing this, Carrie and Liam were excited to take the kites they had made at VBS this summer. Carrie got hers in the air with no problem, and we all got to enjoy it!

Liam would have stripped naked if he had been allowed. He LOVES sand. Here he is, rolling down a slight ridge.

Yes, that's the moon behind Hinrew. And yes, Damon is throwing sand. Again.

Horses, of courses!

I've always wanted to go horseback riding for real. My sweet hubby signed us up for a morning ride at Equine Adventures down on Hatteras. This sweet boy is my new buddy, Buzz.

And this boy's name is Tonka. Let me give you a little perspective on how big he actually is.

Almost taller than Scott. He's a big boy!

And he's a total lovebug. I told Scott that Tonka must be the Newfie of the horses there: he was the biggest, darkest, prone to snacking along the trail, and had to be encouraged to move it. Could have just taken him home, but our car was loaded as it was. Too bad. Will just have to go back and visit again, I guess! 0=D

On the way back from horses...

We saw such pretty dragonflies on our ride. This guy was kind enough to pose and say cheese for us. =D

This is the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. We didn't go in, so I don't have anything special to say about it. Hehe!

I love the rolling hillocks and sea grasses. I'd like to blow this picture up and try to paint it someday in my spare time. When I'm 80. *sigh*

Pretty sure this is Bodie Island lighthouse- looks like it is getting a facelift!

The Sound

The kids preferred the Sound to the ocean, probably for the lack of large waves, so we went there a handful of times to enjoy the peace. The kids borrowed life vests and boards from Lainie and Gary, and had a ball paddling around. It's very shallow where we were, so they loved that they could go way, way out there and still touch the bottom. Dada and Hinrew got the kayaks out and had a good time with them, as well.

Play time

We got to play in the rain a little bit, and Damon got to lick the rain off of the deck chair cushions. To quote my mother, "I have no explanation."

We also got the play doh out for the kids and Liam made an alien and a knight. You can figure out which is which.

Much to Damon's delight, SpongeBob is in Happy Meals these days. "FahBob" went everywhere with us, and even the big kids played with him sometimes...
